Join a relaxed, hands-on session on what moving from Oracle to PostgreSQL looks like in practice.
Many teams are curious about this move but aren't sure where to start, especially when an application depends on the database. In this lab we'll work through it together, step by step, with a sample database and a small Java application. Along the way we'll try out the new AI-assisted tools from Microsoft that make the journey much smoother.
You don't need to be a Oracle or PostgreSQL expert. Come with curiosity and your questions, and you'll leave with hands-on experience and a clear picture of how such a migration comes together.
What we'll explore together
Getting to know a sample Oracle database and the Java application that uses it
Converting the database design to PostgreSQL with the help of the PostgreSQL extension for VS Code
Letting GitHub Copilot help us work through the trickier parts
Moving the data across and checking that everything arrived safely
Updating the Java application so it runs smoothly on PostgreSQL
Testing the result and talking about what a real-world move might look like
To get the most out of the day
Please bring a laptop (Windows, Linux or macOS) with VS Code installed. A GitHub Copilot Business, Enterprise or Pro+ license, plus Java 17, Maven and Git, will help too. Don't worry if you're missing something: we'll share simple setup notes ahead of time and are happy to help you get ready.
